In the world of radio controlled cars they use acetone to unglue tyres from wheel rims, they recommend taking the parts you want to unglue and placing them in a sealed Tupperware container with a small amount of acetone in an eggcup (for example) the fumes are supposed to permeate through the adhesive and desolve it, although it takes around 24hrs, try googling 'removing rc tyres from wheel rims using acetone',

30 hours in a sealed container with a small amount of nail polish remover and... Still stuck together. Most of the remover had evaporated though, any suggestions?

Snip off the rod flush with the wheel and drill out the hole. You will have to have another set of rods though.
Two small flaws-no drill, and no spare rod.

No, I think I'll just put a regular wheelset in and normal side rods and hope to find some scrap engines before the train show in 2016
