Are the magnets that allow the skaters to move around the ice in the figures or under the surface? Wonder if one could modify other figures, (not Lemax or Dept 56) to skate with either a magnet or piece of metal under it?

As I understand it, the magnets are under the "ice". I recall seeing people on YouTube modifying other figurines, enabling them to skate on the rink by installing some metal (coins) under them.
But to me, it's sheer magic!

After Percy delivered all the letters to Santa at the North Pole in the last video, it’s time for the good people of Christmas Village to get their Christmas trees! Thomas will deliver them!

Is Lemax still using formed Styrofoam package that makes these easily stored with protection for future Xmas scenes and to be handed down?
Yes, and "personalized". Each building has its own custom styrofoam box, in order to preserve it, because they are fragile and there is no other way to protect them.

What do you mean by "personalized" ?
Each styrofoam box is made exactly according to the outlines of the building that is placed in it, so that the building fits perfectly into the box and to avoid bumping.

Oh, of course, I thought it was personalized for you, with your name or something.
