I wondered if that was you as the other watcher Ripley. I had actually tried to work with this seller too, especially since he originally erred on the shipping which was listed as over $33. He didn't like what my offer was and his counter was more than I was will to pay even with corrected shipping but he was nice about it, good communication. I was just going to keep the grey track and fix and resell the train and controller which I have done with four other of these sets. With my experience, a lot of sellers that aren't familiar with these don't know that you have to have the engine switch On for the controller to work. Maybe this is exactly what they did since they said the controller turned on but the train didn't move. Also these don't have a very long range and the signal can be blocked by objects. So if this is the case, you should be good to go, anxious to hear what you find.
Yeah the shipping was outrageous and I asked him then he changed it from $33 to $13. What I wanted to spend and offered was declined but I ended up going a bit higher as I figured it would be a nice to have for the collection. Good to hear on the easy fix, I am hoping that's all it is. And yeah the distance on these style seems to be terrible, line of sight only.
Nice score, one of the few sets I know of with a grey slope.
It is a beautiful set especially for the rare grey 17" sloped rail and the rarer 4 sloped curve "A" rails which I think are exclusive to this set. As far as I know they never made the "B" curved rails for any set.
The D51 Steam set's tracks are dark grey and I found out the hard way. When I first started searching for all things grey (light) the pictures I was seeing on the Japan Auctions for listings of this set made the track look light grey. I bought up 2 boxed sets and one loose set and was so disappointed when they all arrived to find them darker than I was looking for. Needless to say that I sold off all of them.
It took a long time and many hours keeping up with the Ebay and Japan auctions to amass what I have. Several times I had to buy large bulk listings just to get some bits of track. The rarest of the the light grey tracks are the "A" sloped curves, the 17" sloped straight rail (which you have both now), the half length straight, the quarter length straight and the M/M and F/F adapter straights.
Interesting. yeah I can see how that could be bad when trying the get matching track. I will likely not use the grey track but will probably keep it with the set incase I were to try and resell one day.
