I never had any idea concealing the batteries could've caused corrosion. That was nice to know.
I always try to remove batteries when I store them, too many horror stories with old cheaper batteries

Absolutely this is the case with me too, but if i'm gonna store them for long periods of time, i put aluminum foil in between the battery and both terminals, so if corrosion were to occur, it would go to the foil, rather than the terminal. Like a barrier almost. Maybe one of these days i should put up a tutorial on how to fix the corrosion on the terminals.

Why even take the chance? Because of stories I have heard from our members here, I removed all the batteries from all our units and only install batteries in the trains that run on the layout at the time. When I did go to remove them all I did catch a couple that were in the early stages of leakage, just in the nick of time.
