I believe this thread only discusses trains that were physically released in Plarail and TrackMaster, and not ones that don't (Am I correct, Muddy?).

HankAmericanEngine; It may not be as nicely detailed as the HiT Toys version, but at least it's not tender powered, and it's pre-Revolution.

Good thing you've put this into the general category so all ranges are on the table. Difficult choice whether it's worth including engines you've only seen pictures of. I've settled with engines that I own.

1: Confused Thomas from Thomas and Freight Cars Set (lovely face and one of the few Motor Road and Rail releases of Thomas with a white running board.)

2: Sir Handel (TrackMaster by Fisher-Price version) (aesthetically pleasing engine with a nice shape and good likeness of Sir Handel, plus so shiny.)

3: Percy and Rocky (A well-known face captured so well, plus some bonus crane interactivity. What's not to love?)

4: Edward (2012-2014 TrackMaster by Fisher-Price version) (The face just pops, a lot of wheels even if some don't touch the track, and a nice looking engine when it runs, even if the tender looks a bit too far apart)

5: Gator and Marion (An unique shiny looking engine, plus the bonus of a moving steamshovel and a fitting little rock truck can perfectly blend in with Marion's shovel. Plus all pieces look visually appealing on their own or all together.)

5. HitToys Hiro "Lost & Found"
Talking/flip-face version...totally unique, with awesome production values.
4. Plarail/Tomy Yoshitsune
Beautiful compact little western steamer...perfectly appointed with gold, red, & mint green pin-striping on its black tender and engine.
3. Tomy Good Western
Identical to the a Yoshitsune, except it is molded in red.
2. Tomy/Plarail B20
One of a kind design...unlike any other release. Simple and unassuming, it is one of the most reliable engines under any circumstances.
1. Plarail Gold Thomas
Obviously because of its gold gilding.

Hmmm... It's a bit like asking a parent which child is their favorite but here goes.

D51-200: Post 2012 version and yes, it's ubiquitous and maybe easy to over look. I love Mikados in real life and the current Plarail version is a lovely model of a great workhorse engine. Special mention also goes to D51-498 for being a neat variant of the standard engine.

C11-171: I love the kind of odd proportions of the old C battery Japanese tank engines and they can really "pull the varnish" in old railroad parlance. While really similar to the more common C12, it's unique enough to stand out. I also think the dark purple coaches are just too cool.

C62-2 Silver Swallow: Again, really similar to the current and easier to find Plarail C61. It's a bit more unique and attractive and a very nice runner. There have been a couple different versions but the one I'm referring to has the working headlight and comes in the set with an EF200 and Shinkansen.

C58-1: A beautiful little engine both in real life and in Plarail form. This was the first non-Thomas steam locomotive I bought for my son and I liked it so much, I eventually got one for myself. I'm disappointed that I missed the SL Ginga version but I'm quite happy with this one.

Shooting Star Gordon: The first and so far only Thomas character I've bought new in box for myself. While I like Pacific class engines in general, including the British A3 and A4, I chose this one because it closely resembles the Pennsylvania K4 streamliners. It's also an impressive runner and just a good looking engine.

I feel like I've barely scratched the surface here and haven't even gotten to the diesels yet!
