I know most of you will probably already know this but I wanted to share in case someone is having a similar issue. This will likely work for other Trackmaster but I have not tested it.
So here is what I had. I purchased a lot of broken/repair trains. I found that one was the r/c (remote controlled) Diesel. I had seen the small black remote some time ago on eBay but sis not get t as I did not have the train. Well I lucked out because it was still there. I hurried to buy it now for $3.99. I received the remote in the mail the other day and to my suprise, diesel did not work still.
After taking him all the down to nothing I found the issue. I saw a switch under the front set of wheels but it was basically like a shell, meaning there was a metal housing but no switch. I was thinking it was a "sensor" or pressure switch similar to other trains, like the talking ones. Sure enough that was it. I wanted to test first so I used a screw driver to short the two sodered points. After that the r/c functions worked. For now I just connected the two ends of the wire together. I may find another switch later on to put back in but for now it is ok.
I know I have made the mistake before of taking apart a broken train only to find it was something simple so keep in mind the pressure switch/sensor. I will try and post some pics later. Thanks and let me know if there are any questions.
Update: here are some pics of the switch:
