Next to the stuffed Thomas those are little bath squirting toys.

Did you know that James wasn’t always a splendid red engine? This version of James has him designed just as he was 70 years ago when the first Thomas & Friends stories featured James—all in black! Enjoy a piece of history with this limited-release engine, only around for the 70th Anniversary celebration! (taken from http://www.thomaswoodenrailway.com/shop/...ames-cdk42)
Those wooden engines look compatable with 'Brio' and 'big jigs', my and dad have a box of brio my kids play with when we visit, it used to be mine and my brother and sisters, I'd be lieing if I said I didn't enjoy playing with it when the kids get it out! All in the name of helping them,

Oh yes...I remember those now that you mention it. My Grandson had them when he was an Infant.

Now I didn't know that. When and why did he change to red?

Howdy @"Super"!

In "The Railway Series" books, James was originally painted black with red lining and he had wooden brake blocks; after he had an accident, caused by the Troublesome Trucks, and was rescued by Thomas, Sir Topham Hatt had him painted red with gold lining to cheer him up in addition to the repairs and proper brake blocks.

The story is laid out, somewhat plainly, in the model series of the Television show, although James was in the red livery; The Adventure Begins has James in his original colours before the accident, and then repaints him his red livery following his repairs.
Residential train-afficionado in training, and Thomas & Friends fan.

You nailed that explanation! I'm slowly learning my Thomas history. I don't let my kid watch much TV so we have learned the characters from books and toys. I think I'm going to buy the original stories to learn about all the characters.
