preserved steam loco Ab608 [passchendaele, in honor of railway men who fell in the war] visited wanganui from wellington on sunday. it got to the outskirts about 1.30pm, which where i started my chase. others started from towns 20min or furthur away. i got home about 5pm after following and videoing the train at crossings around town.
a really nice loco and one i hadnt seen before.

Excellent photos here and on you site Sunhuntin. She is a real beauty and a great way to remember those lost their lives.. Those matching passenger coaches are great too. I can count at least seven, were there more? Love the commemorative Drumhead on the rear coach. I am curious as to the loading of Sodium Silicate. Do they burn that along with the coal? I am also curious about the rails. Why don't I see any ties? Thanks for sharing these with us.
i think there was 7 coaches and something akin to a baggage car right at the front. usually when these coaches come up, theres like 3-4 max. when it came past at 1.30, i had no idea it would be that long.
sodium silicate? no idea! will have to ask my friend, he knows more than me, lol.
the ties are there, just buried under the ballast. they are more visible elsewhere within the yard and out of it. not sure why they hid them like that, but it makes it easier to walk.

no idea when i will get the videos loaded, but i will post here when i do. likely next week sometime.

Thanks Sunhuntin

When you said "under the same name as here" I assumed you meant the title of this thread "steam engine Ab608 Passchendaele comes to town" Thanks for the links. Smile

I really like your friends videos of the Recreating Wanganui's Tramway and the No'12 Is Back In Service. Love street cars like this and recreating it along the water is quite nice. Have you rode on it?

I can't find the dx5051 you referred to.

dx5051 is the username. http://www.youtube.com/user/dx5051 sorry, was early when i typed the other bit. lol

i havent ridden the tram, too expensive for what it does, lol. could walk the same distance, likely faster, for free. the mayor is a big supporter of anything along that bit of the river, so a lot of ratepayers money ends up down there. other clubs in other locations get a big, fat zero. shes even changing the street down there to accomodate the market, causing the big trucks to be sent up a street that is covered with school kids twice a day. very dangerous as its not wide enough to be safe. [sorry, its a sore spot!]

Well at any rate it still is a pretty sight just watching the tram roll by with the nice setting of the waterfront.
