I noticed that myself when I posted the pictures, but I think that is a combination of the flash being on - otherwise you get a strange picture when your subject is pretty much totally black - and maybe condensation as it is cold out here today and I opened it and took the pictures pretty soon after it arrived.  It may also be that the boiler is metal too, I know the running plate is, but the weight of the loco it feels more like a Dublo model which is almost all metal.

As for other liveries, there is also one available in LMS colours, you know the dark crimson & yellow lining, I have one of those already.  Personally I probably prefer the dark crimson to the black of BR times as it makes the locomotives look so much nicer and regal.

I agree with liking the burgundy livery. So many steamers are black so its a refreshing change.
The rivets show up better as well Smile

Another of my Hornby pre-orders has just arrived this morning, a new version of the 'Hush Hush' LNER locomotive which includes a DCC decoder and Steam Generator.  I won't include loads of pictures of the loco as if you check back through this thread you'll find my post about the original release when it came out and which already resides in my collection.

You may wonder why I wanted this when I already have a 'standard' version of this.  Well quite simply this loco which tends to be a 'marmite' design in terms of looks and livery is one that I really love and the chance to add a version with a sound decoder and steam generator as standard was simply too tempting.

I have included a couple of shots though as it looks to my eyes that they have improved the finish of the livery even better this time round making it even more handsome than the original version.  What I've also included are a bunch of shots of the documentation that comes with it that illustrates how the decoder and steam generator function.

Enjoy!!

Happy New Year Nigel! ☺️

Love the flat green color.
Ah, it is actually Grey as per the box illustration, it was just poor lighting as I didn't use the flash as that adds reflections/hot spots and as it was in the murky English early evening there were colour hues from the light/TV which made it look green lol!

Incidentally, a few hours after that delivery I received a further pre-order delivery, this one is a bit of a departure for me.  It is TT120 scale (nothing new there as you know I've been buying those), but its a diesel and not a steamer (shock/horror).  To be fair its quite an old style diesel as its a modelling of the old BR intercity 125 express - so called as they were capable of 125 mph and formed the backbone of the express services here for decades (I first travelled on one in 1979 and they were not new then!!).  But as it was the first 100mph+ train I ever travelled on it does hold a little sentimental value for me, I can also say that even in the lowest travel class they were far more comfortable than the more modern trains around now, lovely comfortable seats and space.  Curiously, although I'm not sure when they entered service you may not believe it but there are still some of the privatised rail companies with them in service now.  I guess that shows how well they were made in the first place and to a degree how advanced they were for their time.

This one is in one of the original BR intercity liveries (there was a later more grey coloured one) and reflects the type I travelled on.  If you're wondering I bought the set rather than the train pack as I could get that for less than the cost of the individual train pack and DCC decoders that would be required to make it digital.  The track etc... is just a bonus.  I also already have a complete set of the additional carriages needed to make a full consist of this train (8 other coaches as if I recall correctly including all the usual travel classes, buffet car and sleeper).  I picked up the coaches during the Hornby sale around Q3 last year at less than half price knowing I'd got this set on pre-order.
