Part of the TomyTrain or later stylized Tomy Trains series! They did some Thomas ones, fairly uncommon in the US but not hard to find in the UK. Proudly Lego compatible and similar in some ways to Round Trip Plarail, magnetic couplings and reversing gearboxes.

I just had my Thomas series ones (plus an Intercity) out over Christmas.

Early UK box

In addition to the Santa Fe style diesel, they also did a white Amtrak style one, as well as the Intercity and another high speed train style thing with lights. Unfortunately outside of the Thomas series they just did recolors of this American style steam locomotive as far as steam engines go.

I have a website where I have been writing about and photographing many of the sets and pieces that I find interesting.

AJ, this is what we call 'dark blue tracks'. It ran from 1992 until 1997, with Tomica World replacing it in 1998. You will notice that the driving wheels have teeth on them beside the rim, in effect like a rack-and-pinion mountain railway. Then look closely at the ramp track piece in Duck's second photo. Several of the early models of Plarail sound / talking stations were re-branded into the Tomy Train line. Pretty much all the trains, sets, and accessories are still widely available in the second-hand market and on auction sites, at least in the UK. There are many further examples, plus pamphlets/catalogues on Sun's website.

@Duck

That is quite the collection of Vintage Tomy you have there Duck. Love how you integrated all into one very large Layout. I always loved watching videos of when the train engines did the reverse and forward thing, especially the ones that incorporate a switch rail or auto switch rail where the engine went in a different direction from whence it came. Almost like a shunting yard. Thanks for sharing.
