On the inside there is a platform on each side which is a good spot for PlaKids. Looking at those packaged ones it looks like they were sold as both single and double wide in one as each package looks to have the roof piece included to widen the tunnel. Must be an easier piece to lose as I have seen so many in the auctions as a single wide with no middle piece.

I am curious as to what the nubs are for on each end of the upper roadway. My guess is they are like half of the top of a pier and they are simply where bridge sides are snapped into like they would be on a normal pier. That looks like their only use, what do you think? Sure would have been nice if they made them in such a way as they could be connected together so a long curved tunnel could be made.
Neat video and neat re-creation of the Croc headquarters building
You're right, Super, that's exactly what they are - the half of the top of a pier, and the single track bridge fits perfectly:
I suppose it would be rather difficult to think of the useful extension of that combination - double track on the lower level and single track (with the bridge!) on the upper... I'll just keep it as a nice trainspotting place for little people without an upper track. And yes, it would be nice if they made it with the possibility of making longer tunnels by connecting them. The easiest way it would be, in my opinion, to make this tunnel with the (gray) tracks in the tunnel as a part of it - just like the "underground" rail. Then it would be easy to connect them. As this is an 1998 item (and the straight "Big Tunnel" is even older) it sure is time to produce some double track tunnels, since there is a bunch of single track ones.

WITH THE EIZAN RAILWAY SIGHTSEEING TRAIN „HIEI“ TO THE SACRED MOUNTAIN Eizan Line (from Demachiyanagi to Yase-Hieizanguchi) started its operation in 1925 as a pilgrimage route to Hieizan Enryaku-ji temple. It has been loved by many locals and tourists together with Eizan Cable Car and Ropeway as important means of transportation from Kyoto city center to Mt Hiei. “Oval” motif boldly expresses the concepts of “Mystical atmosphere” and “Dynamism transcending time and space”. These concepts are exemplified by the two destinations of Eizan Railway lines, Mt.Hiei and Mt.Kurama, which hold solemn and sacred atmosphere, deep history, earth energy and power. The stripe patterns on the side of the train symbolize fog covering Mt.Hiei. The destination signage on its exterior is displayed in four languages, including Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese. Eizan Railway consist of Eizan Main Line which links to the foot of Mt Hiei, and Kurama Line heading to Mt.Kurama branching halfway from the main line. Fall colors along the line are the main attraction every year but other than autumn season, it becomes a task as to how to attract tourist to the spot. One car train HIEI, remodeled from existing vehicle transformed itself into an all-season attraction tourist train of Rakuhoku area. The two spiritual Mount Hiei and Mount Kurama of Eizan Railway are each symbolized by circle and linked together to form the iconic Ellipse element of the exterior and interior. HIEI not only serves as everyday commuter train to the local but also provides extraordinary travel experience for tourist to travel back in time from modern Kyoto to the ancient sacred mountain. Radical design of the mystical green Eizan Railway HIEI Train won 2018 Good Design Award. Here are some pics of my Plarail Hiei:
