How About Replacement Metal Gears?

I like everyone here knows that the old nylon gears are one of the biggest weaknesses in PlaRail loco's, so have you ever considered using metal ones like these? They are the standard 11 tooth gears so should be fine with PlaRail models; Hornby Ringfield Metal Gears

That is a neat idea, not sure if it would work but worth a try if one had the means. I haven't come across any 11 tooth gears in the Trackmaster/Plarail trains though. The key would also be the outside and inside diameter.
It seems like a good idea( metal is stronger than plastic) but I would bet that they would just end up transferring their energy back into the next weakest link in the chain, most likely the tiny plastic shaft holes in the motor casing would begin to crack, or possibly something internally within the actual motor? Also it would probably be a VERY LOUD unpleasant grinding sound that would produce a very fine and messy metallic dust.
Play nice & have fun!!Smile

Lol! I reckon they'd work fine, I've got some ringfield motor locos I'll have to check see what size the gears are...
