Scottish Twins Faulty Gearbox?

5 Replies, 7212 Views

So, my hit toys Donald has been playing up for the past few years. Whenever it finishes a wheel rotation, it buffers in place for a second before moving again. I found that putting a bit of pressure on the axle fixes it, but I don't have a clue on how to permanently fix it. Any ideas?

Hey there and welcome to BPT. This issue sounds like possibly a cracked/stripped gear. You can buy replacement gears for these and they are not too difficult to replace with the proper tools. The other option if the gear is indeed the issue is to use a bit of super glue. Be sure that the screws holding the engine to the chassis are snug as well, I have seen that where they just needed to be tightened.

Thanks ripley! So, I was able to get the screw for the base of the shell off and found the drive unit. So, is the screw on the back of the drive unit the way to get to the gearbox?

Speaking of stripped gears, is there anywhere I can buy gears for stripped axles? I have quite a bit of those broken boys around I wanna get around to self fixing. Getting tired of the superglue method lol

@PopGoes
The gear I am thinking is cracked is the one on the axel. An easy test is to remove the battery then turn on the engine switch. If the wheels move freely then the gear is probably cracked.

@StarSwitcher.
There are various sizes out there for these but a common one I have found is 14t (teeth), 2.5mm (shaft diameter), and 5mm (thickness). It seems like there are not as many on eBay as when I looked before but these look similar.

@ripley So, I tested it and it won't move with the switch on without a battery. Does that mean anything significant?
