U.S. TnA James voiced by Robin Smith?

6 Replies, 7369 Views

I just looked at the Thomaswiki site to see Robin Smith credited with voicing the U.S.Version of TnA James??
Ripley would you look into this and check yours please?
Alec Baldwin has been listed as the voice for years, but now it has changed?
This is a bit unnerving since all that the info I have to search for one is based on what I thought was correct, but now seems to not be so? Who in the heck is Robin Smith??
Holy James in a giant peach!?!? :/
Play nice & have fun!!Smile

Unfortunately for wiki's they are often innacurate because anyone can edit them. Hope we find the truth!

It sounded nothing like Alec Baldwin when I heard it in a video, so I was always skeptical. I even started my own inquiry thread about the TnA engines' voice actors back in 2015.

Robin Smith was the primary voice behind Thomas products during the early-mid 2000s. His voice was heard in countless American DVD menus, bonus features and video/PC games like Trouble on the Tracks, Building the New Line and Railway Adventures. He also recorded some other merchandise, including the Thomas Sing-A-Tune Balloon (as Sir Topham Hatt). Here's an example of his voice in a DVD feature:

To me, it sounds like Alec Baldwin. I do not know the other name nor what the voice sounds like, but have seen several Alec Baldwin commercials and movies and have to say, most of the phrases sound just like him.

Just watched the video above, sorry missed that one at first. I dunno, that guy seems like he has an accent of some sort that i did not pick up on with the James.

So I went back to watch my video I posted (uploaded to Photobucket) and kept getting spam about winning something and to spin a wheel..lol.. I have uploaded to YouTube now, so everyone can have a listen and see what you think.

Again, the engine was not on and shell was off to try and get the best "clear" audio of the voice. Also the wheels were being repaired so Thomas wheels were substituted in.

I can see, if I am picturing in my head Alec Baldwin, (schweddy balls) my mind says its him but when I hear the inflection on some words in Ripleys video, it does not sound like how he would say those words at all and seems more like the voice in Da-Lag's video. Undecided The mystery continues...unless someone here is friends with Alec and can ask him? Dodgy

In the Link below it states this "His voice register sounds similar to Alec Baldwin"
And couldn't it be that whatever actor did the voice in the TnA trains didn't do it specifically but Tomy/Plarail simply took audio tracks given to them from their work in other places and putting it in the trains?

I'm usually pretty good at figuring out voices but this one has me stumped! It sounds like Robin Smith may have been hired because he could do a reasonable facsimile of Alec Baldwin's voice, so it's a tough call!

Because of the era of Thomas and Friends my kids watch, I realize how odd it is to hear someone other than Kerry Shale doing James' voice. Big Grin
