plarail james starter set

16 Replies, 47281 Views

when i first saw this on a local auction site, i thought it was another set of those pull back engines, that was missing them and had a james put in as a replacement. closer reading indicated you could choose from the three shown, something i havent seen before.

originally i wasnt going to bother, and then "might as well" symdrome hit, and i bought it. reasons being its plarail in an unusual box, i needed a new james and its complete.

one thing im not sure of is if the engines came with different trucks than whats shown on the box, as james has a closed van, while the box shows him with a truck.

Thats a very neat little set. I am surprised to see Plarail spelled out in English on the upper left corner of the box. I am not so sure I have seen this other than the Japanese spelled Logo on a box.
thanks, super.
it also references motor road and rail on the back. its almost like its half and half. if it didnt have plarail in english, i may not have bought it, since the set itself is nothing special.

i thought i had another set with plarail spelled out like that, but cant find the photo, so may be wrong there.

This is an interesting and unusual line and I don't think Tomy have made anymore of these sets. To my knowledge, they're just sold in some countries in Asia excluding Japan. I remember seeing a couple of them at an airport in Kuala Lumpur in 2011. There's about 17 of these unique sets including Thomas and the Jet Engine Set and Thomas and Spencer Racing Set. The Percy Starter Set also differs from the box containing a black brakevan and troublesome truck
