The Most Awesome Layout

While looking around Youtube for train videos I stumbled on what I think is the most Awesome Layout I have seen. Maybe some of you have seen it. He has several videos and slideshows on his channel and I would recommend you check them out. He has done a great job in the painting and the nighttime lighting is fantastic. He has a sort of time line slide show (see next post) which reminds me of how we got started and maybe will be familiar to you to.

Yes a very impressive layout and he even painted and ballasted the track! That's dedication haha, This video among others were all inspirations when I was building mine.

Here was mine when I built it, my goal was to have long sections of double track for running trains, not very exciting except to railfans haha. I do like spirals and yards will do some of those in my next layout.

This fellow painted everything to match even all the stations and signal towers. He must have a paint booth or something. And the time it must have took for all the track and the masking off of the accessories...just amazing. He must have put at least 2 or three coats on the tracks and maybe a coat or 2 of clear don't you think? As it would be easy to see the bright blue show up on the rubbed off parts of the rails but I don't see any. And he painted a lot of Fex track which had to take time. I would think that with the movement of each piece and the snapping in parts would surely show chipped paint but I don't see any. Would like to know how he prepped the tracks before painting. His wiring is fantastic too. He even has lighting on some of his trains like head lamps and inside the coaches. More can be learned from his Web Page.

Thats how we, ahem...me...got hooked but I blame Ebay. First had a very small circle track for Thomas, wanted to make it a little longer so I bought a handful of track used from Ebay. Had to add a few building and turnout, back to Ebay. Buy a huge lot of track and accessories......and again, and again....its all Ebays fault, I am not to blame [Image: shaking-head-no-smiley-emoticon.gif]

Well I have been doing a little bit of experimenting with painting track with no luck. Found matched colors to the light gray tracks. First I tried a paint by Krylon that is supposed to be used for plastic and especially for plastic outdoor furniture which was a total failure. Didn't cover too well and cracked and peeled off when snapping it into another track. Tried the good Tamiya modelers paint for aircraft with a flat clear coat over top and it covered perfectly and initially looked great in the layout with no cracking. Looked good and trains ran smoothly over it and I thought I had it until I unsnapped the piece of track from the layout resulting in some (not like the Krylon) cracking and peeling at the coupling. Will try to experiment a little more with the Tamiya but that paint is expensive. The layout builder above mentions on his web page that his experimenting with paint resulted in him using Revells spray paint. With all the painting he did he must have spent a lot on paint.

Hmmm...wonder if having a thread dedicated to painting in the Modifications Forum would be a good place to exchange ideas and get others who have experimented a chance to share what they have done. [Image: ummm-smiley-emoticon.gif]
the only painting ive done was done with a spray can. i gave a basic loop of blue track a snow-like dusting for a christmas layout and havent noticed any issues. i think it being a light cover is the reason for that. i never tried to remove the blue completely and didnt put any on the coupling fronts, only along the top and sides. this was before i realised they had track in other colors. lol.

this page has ok photos of the track i mean http://sunsthomasandfriends.weebly.com/2...-show.html

Thanks Sunhuntin for sharing you experience. The snowy scene looks excellent [Image: two-thumbs-up-smiley-emoticon.gif]
thanks, super. i wanted the kids to still be able to see that its the same track as what they likely have at home [i dont think trackmaster has quite taken off like tomy did and most are familiar with the blue track] which is why i left it like that.
