Just arrived today, the C-58 Ginga Steam Engine 6 Car Set

Really bought this just for the C-58 Steam Engine as it is exclusive to this set. Very similar to the C-57 but this toy is not Tender powered. Detailing is very nice with its drumhead and dual headlights. Side cab windows very detailed and embossed as are the rear cab windows although they are not trimmed out. Sadly no front facing windows. Love the wheels with the holes and the middle wheel is large and detailed. Would like to have seen this new steam engine with the new side rods like the new Gordon but these are fine. Might have been nice for a little detailing to be in the recessed square on the smoke deflectors as in the real train but not that bad. Tender is also nicely detailed and embossed. New type Tomy AA motor that runs smooth and quiet. Not sure why they used a long coupling on the engine for the tender but I think I will swap it out with some normal length black couplers and see if it looks better.

I was surprised that the 4 coaches are not wrapped in stickers but all painted but I am not a fan of painted on windows so I will probably just try to sell them. Another surprise is that the coaches are 3 different shades of blue. I am assuming that maybe the real one is like this? Also something I guess is reflective of the real coaches is that 2 of these are very detailed and embossed on one end with windows doors and lights.

Sure thing Sunhuntin. I will get on it for you.

Each coach has the same painted graphics on both sides.

Maybe you are on to something Sunhuntin since they do seem to depict celestial bodies of some kind.

Absolutely beautiful! Where did you get this set? I've had my eyes on it for quite some time!

Those symbols imprinted onto the coaches are actually Zodiac symbols! One of them is a Scorpio (scorpion), and the other I think is Taurus; I'm not too sure about the remaining two, but this is a lovely set! I might just buy it!

Looks like they are back in stock at Hobby Search Hank. I was fortunate enough to get in on the initial pre-order a couple months ago. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10298493

I am not sure if the Japanese do the Zodiac but they are constellations I think. In real life this is a one of a kind train. Also interesting, after looking this up after you mentioned the Zodiac, The four coaches are restored diesel powered which would explain about the 2 detailed front and rear cars and could run by themselves. What I don't see is different shades of blue. Wonder if there is an explanation from Tomy somewhere? It looks like the real train is really quite new starting in April 2014. I would imagine that this set might be a Limited Edition to go with the new real train. Check out this link for pictures and info on what is in those 4 cars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SL_Ginga
