Edward was around in the late 1800s, but he was working in the UK. I think it is the Narrow Gauge Stanley since he was American and was alive around then maybe?
Actually, Thomas was made in 190X, So he'd be more than 100 yo now.
The 70 years is since the Railway series was first published, 1945. The Reverend Wilbert Awdry never wanted to published the stories at first but it was his wife that persuaded him to publish them.
That marked the start of the TTTE franchise.
Also, I'm from Canada, so I don't know much about USA history.
