All in the name of helping them,
Yes they are compatible with Brio and Big jigs, we have some stuff from both buy my little guy really loves Thomas! The cost is high so I need to build our collection slowly.

In "The Railway Series" books, James was originally painted black with red lining and he had wooden brake blocks; after he had an accident, caused by the Troublesome Trucks, and was rescued by Thomas, Sir Topham Hatt had him painted red with gold lining to cheer him up in addition to the repairs and proper brake blocks.
The story is laid out, somewhat plainly, in the model series of the Television show, although James was in the red livery; The Adventure Begins has James in his original colours before the accident, and then repaints him his red livery following his repairs.
You nailed that explanation! I'm slowly learning my Thomas history. I don't let my kid watch much TV so we have learned the characters from books and toys. I think I'm going to buy the original stories to learn about all the characters.
