In "The Railway Series" books, James was originally painted black with red lining and he had wooden brake blocks; after he had an accident, caused by the Troublesome Trucks, and was rescued by Thomas, Sir Topham Hatt had him painted red with gold lining to cheer him up in addition to the repairs and proper brake blocks.
The story is laid out, somewhat plainly, in the model series of the Television show, although James was in the red livery; The Adventure Begins has James in his original colours before the accident, and then repaints him his red livery following his repairs.
