Thanks Ucwepn, nice video. The engine looks a bit smaller than i pictured it in real life. I can't quite make out what the side rods are for. They certainly aren't like the ones found on Steam engines.

The connection rods on a diesel like this are exactly the same as the connection rods on a steam engine - they distribute the drive equally between all the connected axles.

In simple terms, what's missing are the piston rods which on a steam engine transfer the driving force from the pistons to one of the connected axles. On a diesel like this one of the axles is driven directly from the motor.
