I know what you mean about not being able to afford these things back in the day. They were way more expensive over here than they were for you and definitely out of reach of my pocket money at the time. About the only standalone model I got was an American car in racing livery, I think it was a Dodge Charger or similar. Boy I loved that car and used to totally disassemble the motor, brushes etc... to clean it and lube it very carefully then re-assemble it to get it as perfect as I could. Eventually it used to run literally silently from an engine perspective and so smoothly that you could literally just creep along at what would have been walking pace or alternatively fly along flat out. I did have a 3rd set at some point which came with a Nissan something or other and a Ford Escort (that was a UK model made by Ford). Again great little cars although I loved the Escort way above the Nissan. If I recall the set was 'rally' themed hence the choice of basic saloon cars. As with you single cars came on a black base with a clip on clear plastic lid.
The thing is as these things were so expensive relatively speaking I used to treasure them, hence probably why I still have the cars.

Happily collecting things all my life...
