That's the exact same quick method I imagined for the coupling rods. They just need the round bits where the middle (rear driving) wheels are to look like they're fitted to them. Even though they make much smaller rotations at the middle points, it technically gives a better illusion than the "Oliver style" like FfarquharDeveloper's.
