Not by deflation of course, but wheel flats caused by slippage during braking are a long-standing and recurring problem in the rail industry, they can cause extensive damage to wheel bearings, axles and additional infrastructure such as rails and sleepers, and in extreme cases can trigger derailment.
Modern trains have vibration detectors mounted on their bogies. As well as allowing early detection of wheel-flats, continuous analysis of the signals from these sensors can tell rail operators which track sections and operating conditions may be causing them, so that procedures can be modified to reduce their occurrence.
