I've noticed that as well. He's just over 3 yo. Up until recently he had trouble working out how to flip a turn piece if I wanted him to turn it the other way. He was spinning it along the X axis to find out the notches don't align. He's got that worked out now
We need to dismantle the big layout we have upstairs and I'll let him loose with a bunch of tracks to see what he comes up with now. He could either build them in a circle or a long snake-like track. Would be interesting to see how his railorad layouting skill improves. 
He had a lot of fun with this becuase of the sounds the engine makes.
