Repairing Replacing Broken Wires

On my sons steam along thomas I ran the cables outside the coupling when I replaced them because when they are inside the coupling they tend to 'nip' where the coupling pivots, I know it doesn't look as good with them on the outside, but the wires haven't broken since,
