Yeah, you win some, you lose some, I guess! It probably works out better for us anyway and honestly, I would like my next move to be somewhere far away from here.
The idea of living in a converted warehouse is strangely appealing to me. One idea I think is rather cool was used by a Japanese architect some years ago. His house was a large-ish free span open space with the bedrooms built as fully enclosed, wheeled modules. I guess the bathroom(s) and kitchen would be more permanently in place but other rooms could be reconfigured, added or subtracted as needed.
