Well because they are tomica world cars and the tomica world line lasted from 1998-2002 according to the thomas wiki. It depends if you want to take them out or not of the package. I dont think theyre that rare as they are a wide spread release and arnt any rare special edition. Then again if you compare these nib tomica world cars to the NIB tomica world thomas trains and how much they go for they could be worth leaving in the box. As with the corroded batteries i think they wouldve corroded by now. Just judging that the batteries in my thomas trains took 2 years to corrode and since these could be at least 16 years old i think they would be corroded by now. But its up too you, if it was me id leave them in the box as theres just too much risk in opening them and seeing if they would be corroded. Then again i could be wrong and the battery terminals are fine. It entirely up too you
