Yes, it is much better to replace the whole wire if possible as trying to re-attach the broken wire only shortens it and will surely keep breaking. Additionally making the new wire a tad bit longer should help with slack at the coupling so its next trip down the stairs won't result in another separation. Now that you have James apart this far, why not go just a bit further and remove the motor assembly to see where the wire connects so you know exactly what you have to do. I suggest you take pictures as you remove parts so you know where everything goes back easier. Also when installing a new wire, make sure you thread it through the hole in the white coupler before soldering the last connection.
