Ok, well two updates, the 'white' light has managed at least a week now of constant running (who would have thought it).
Secondly here is a picture of the contents of the multicoloured flashing LED;

I was quite surprised how easy it was to get it open, basically the two parts of the ball are just pressed together with just friction holding them closed. So judicial use of a modelling knife to lever the two parts apart and bobs your uncle its open.
Inside there was simply the two batteries, a small spring to push them all together for a good contact and just the bare LED - so the flashing multicolour one must have the control circuitry built into the LED (amazing!).
Anyway you have two choices you could either just add wires to the legs of the LED and wire it to a battery/switch, or if you want to continue using the ball put two new batteries in it
