Hey ripley, yeah it sounds like the capacitor is the problem, I would replace it for another one of the same size as the original, really the construction of a capacitor means that they aren't actually continuous between one leg and the other - if you've put a short on that will be why the board is getting hot, if the old capacitor is 1 micro farad I'd replace it with another of the same size and it should cure your problems,
