You buy a vintage mint Cadillac, the seller promises to put it on a flat bed, but instead drives it through a sandstorm to deliver it. Then says it's fine because it still runs!?!? Yes what the seller did was deliberate.
If they were packaged as he said he would, and they were damaged during shipping it would have only been a shame, but to spitefully allow damage to them is a sin.
