The previous engines were big, slow, loud and powerful, just as they would be. Also, a lot of sets were designed more like actual railways, in order to let them run. The new ones are almost like "cars on rails", with little to no attention to what makes the show and books what they are. They also appear in misleading sets, which could easily trick people who don't know about the show into thinking that's what it's like. It's as if the new TrackMaster is marketed to entirely different children to the ones that see the show, since it gives them such wrong ideas. If Mattel didn't own the whole franchise, a better company could've easily bought the rights and brought out a better incarnation than ever (even more so than Tomy's).
Yeah, just imagine what a company could do if they put their mind to it. They could have engines as realistic as the Bachmann Thomas and Friends engines, that would be intended for children and collectors of every age, and sets that accurately represent each part of the Island of Sodor!
