for the most part, there are little or no differences between tomy and trackmaster releases. [excluding the current trackmaster line.]

in some, there may be a different drive unit or battery type needed [old james needs a C, whereas a new one might need two AA]

powerful gordon, however, has a different face mold and is rarer, so more expensive. i like him, but barely run him due to the rarity and unlikelyness of being able to replace easily.

others might be able to chime in, but i would be patient, and buy the best you can [boxed as opposed to bulk lots that have been used and abused]
