I wonder if you can just use an old phone by itself without having a contract with a phone company.

I am using an old phone (Samsung Note 2) via WiFi, it does not need a cellular service. It also connects to an iPad. As long as the app is compatible with your phone/tablet it should work.

video quality Yes, but the Gopro is very portable and easier to mount on bikes, cars, etc.

Wonder if plugging in an external Mic it would not pick up the fan noise. Maybe there will be a second generation that addresses that.

Technically there is only one model: One with the included camera X3. The other option is just for the Handle and you use their other Gimbal camera that are for the Phantom copters
