Apologies for just replying now, I haven't been on in a while.

LEGO has always done instructions-based sets, and even though numerous sets come with exclusive pieces, they can still be used in the system in different ways. TrackMaster has it so that there's these large pieces that take up both sides of a loop, so you have to work around that if you want to incorporate into the layout, whereas LEGO has a strict set of guidelines to make sure everything is compatible.
