How to reconnect a wire on the Plarail 2003-2014 James? - Trainboy90 Productions - 02-09-2019

I decided to give sodiering a try, my first project is to reconnect a wire on my 2004 Plarail Talking James because the wire has been disconnected. Does anybody have tips on how this can be done?

I'll start on this project as soon as I get my new Sodiering Iron Kit to start of repairs. I won't be doing all my repairs but it will be useful for motor swaps on engines with soldiered on motors.

I have Ripley replace the corroded Battery Terminal in the Express Coach

the wires are in very rough shape. If possible get a new set of wires. Before you actually yank the old ones, take photos so that you will remember which wires goes to where.

Only the blue wire is in rough shape and what type of wires do I need?

generic copper wire should do.

If I don't want to wires exposed, what AWG wires should I use? Like AWG 18, 20, 22, 24, or 30? I don't want them too wide or too big to fit onto James. I know Amazon or eBat has some.

Then don't strip the plastic covering too much. So use the soldering to cover the exposed Copper

I first purchased a 26ga wire but it was a little too big. 28ga works well and is what I use now, but I may pick up some 30ga to use for more confined spaces.

In addition to all the suggestions above, try finding some tinned silicone wire as the coating is much softer and flexible which is especially good for bending in small spaces and for passing through those couplings that connect the tender to the engine where most of the wire damage occurs. Also remember to have a little slack in the wire for coupler movement.

Thanks, I just sucessfully fixed his motor, all he needs is the battery terminal in the Express Coach replaced which Ripley will take care of for me. Also thanks for the tip for my future soldiering jobs.
