Remote Control Modded PlaRail? - Nigels - 05-09-2018

I keep seeing train sets offered on eBay that have model trains with remote control in the form of a small hand held transmitter.

It just makes me wonder if any of you fine folk have ever thought of buying one of these and transplanting the remote control circuitry into a normal PlaRail model to give you a unique remote control PlaRail train?

Come to that some of these sets also come with sound and smoke in addition to the remote control, maybe these smoke and/or sound units could be transplanted as well, what do you think?

Here's a couple of example sets that can be had for very little money that have the features I mention;

Given I'm planning to show my collection at exhibitions in the future, this would be good for an interactive part of the layout.

Getting children to interact with physical toy trains (as opposed to all the apps out there now) is the only way to save our dying hobby. I don't want to see the day when railway modelling dies out, but I fear I will.

Woah, that went WAY deeper than I anticipated. Sorry.Confused

Very true sentiments there Chrizzly, I wonder the same at times, when I was younger any town would have at least one 'modelling' store that would carry trains, plastic kits, die-cast cars etc... These days trying to find a store stocking trains is becoming a real challenge, plastic kits are not doing much better, even 'collectible' die-cast models are becoming harder and harder to find unless they are called 'Hot Wheels' lol!!

It seems to me these days with youngsters if it's not on a screen they expect it to come fully assembled and ready to go straight out of a box, any effort and they switch off...

So whats your thoughts on the idea? Do you think it would be possible to switch the circuitry into our beloved PlaRail?

You could be onto something there, he loves tinkering with the remote trains and talk n action ones. I can see a step by step video guide coming any day now Smile
