What is this and why does it say "8 Batteries"? The title says "Tokyo Metro Ginza Line with Plarail Light 01 series Takara Tomy Toy" Is this something New/Old? Why is the asking price so high? It also says "transmitter for AA alkaline batteries"....Transmitter??? Does it have some kind of new gimmick to use that many batteries or is this just something lost in the translation.

I think we have something like that. You need battery for the Engine and the 2nd car provides the sounds of engine/car rolling, horn and brakes.
When you stop the train, it makes a braking/air release sound.
But yeah that is a lot of battery on the description.
It should be 1 battery for the main engine and I think 2 AAA batteries in the center car.

I can find many places that are selling this version including Ebay and Amazon but none have a description where you can see what the gimmick is and the battery count. Did find one picture of the box front which shows lights but thats all and I don't see a mention of sound. So I am assuming that the 8 batteries and the word, transmitter, must be a translation thing. The box doesn't show a retail Plarail Model number so this must have been a special release maybe site specific and there weren't that many made to explain the high price. Although that doesn't explain why you can find so many for sale, new.

Mystery solved thanks to Wasinojensei. Only uses one 'C' battery with lights and no sound.

tempted to get something like that, but the sound would drive me nuts after a while.
as an aside, i have decided i need one of those red and yellow tankers as shown in that video at 0:21. would go nicely with the hamburger wagons.
