Hello, this was part of a lot I won. I do not really collect the Ertl or older metal trains so I am not sure on what it is of anything. I did not think much of it until seeing the "sticker face Thomas" thread. Obviously this is not that one but I figured I see what it may be.
From the bottom it shows Ertl 1993. Here are some pics.

I don't know any info on this but doing a quick search of Ebay came up with this magnetic Ben Ertl like your Thomas... Is he powered as they look like they have a switch in the rear. The wheels look like they ride on a rail of some sort.

It's a Gold Rail Series Thomas. They were released in 1993 in the US. Bandai also made them too for Japan known as the Thomas Engine Collection Series (shortened to TECS) for a longer period. Both ranges had a series of sets too, but I think only one, the Roundhouse, was in both ranges.
The switch on the engine activates the magnets, so when you want to uncouple from trucks, you just flick the switch and they pull apart.

It would be more common than some other Gold Rail Series vehicles. I assume it would be worth just a little bit more than a plastic face hook and loop coupling die-cast Thomas which unboxed for a fair price should be AU$6.
