But basically, I had the hardest time finding something that would go in the place of the face. this is some plastic piece i got for 50 cents at a flea market.

Take a look at the beginning of this Thread to see us discussing these Voltage Boosters https://www.blueplastictracks.com/showthread.php?tid=122&highlight=voltage+booster Ucwepn also tried one of these in a video but I can't remember which engine he used it on. I have a handful of these but never got around to trying one out. It looks like there are many now available with different designs and inexpensive.

kmott, in response to your dillemma with face replacements, I , along with many others, have found HO/OO scale smokebox doors (Hornby, Bachmann, etc.) You can find them in bulk on eBay for relatively low prices.
