Don't really know what a stock speed would be. I assume that it can vary from engine to engine.

gave the gearbox a wash, bit faster but still kinda slow

If you have a Hobby Shop near you may help you out especially if they deal in Remote Control Vehicles. See if there is something here that has similar attributes.
