RE: Your favourite train! - Tramp - 05-22-2014 Yeah, I live in the midlands, near Sheffield. Most rail traffic I see at the moment are class 66 ews & rail freight locos, also there are plenty of DMU's and, on the way to work I drive over the east coast mainline so see plenty of the class 91's RE: Your favourite train! - Chrisf1961 - 05-22-2014 Oh oh dont show me GNER! It was huge! RE: Your favourite train! - Chrisf1961 - 05-22-2014 Get me back my beloved train! wheres it gone ! The reason I ask is that sure looks like a nuclear power plants cooling tower in the background. Its amazing to see them all on the same consist with a very heavy grain train battling up a steep hill, if I could get get suitable tarps to cover the trucks I could recreate this scene In the 1960's, I will try and find out more about this photo as its fascinating to me hehe. some comments from the facebook post on the VR historic group: "The photo in question is in fact dated 1965 wheat season." "The R is hauling its 420 ton up the bank and after Warrenheip where the B and T will be taken off, is only there as a mobile compressor. Its performance as a freight hauler is then irrelevant." "Just another day for the Ballarat bank engines. This practice would continue for decades well after steam headed for that big turntable in the sky. Imagine standing there and listening to that. There is a track on the Night Shift LP of B68 and a steam loco on the rear of a goods and it's magic to listen to." "SteamRail, can you please recreate this? Let the purist of blue & gold enthusiasts know when & let us hear the most brilliant mash up of VR sounds together in one as they struggle up the grade. Have an ambulance handy for CPR, & bring plenty of tissues. I don't need to ride it, just load it exactly the same & place us at this spot. I don't care how much tickets are, just let me know when please. : )" hehe RE: Your favourite train! - Super - 05-22-2014 Tramp I have not seen anything but cooling towers look that big and wide here but it does look like the trains cargo is coal. To me it almost looks computer generated as it seems odd in an old black and white picture. That is a huge coal tender to as it dwarfs the gondolas.
