Humbrol acrylic or enamel is very hard wearing and will stick well if the surface is cleaned first.

If you're airbrushing you really should use a primer such as the one I recommended above, not just for the adhesion, but also because the pale colour means you only have to lay on a thin layer of the final colour to get the finish you want.
I can't post any pics of any trains I've sprayed because I haven't done any yet, but I do have a strong background in other fields of scale modelling so I'll use this as an excuse to show off something else. At least there's a Japanese theme going on.

Wow, that's quite impressive. I don't have an airbrush, sadly, and I don't think I can get away with buying one (compressors are fairly expensive, and I promised my wife to be this would be a low-cost hobby).
I'm thinking of using the Halfords grey primer as suggested, and Humbrol Brunswick green spray in a can for the body. Depending on the shade of primer I may just leave the roof in primer grey. We'll see.
Should I sand the 'Clarabel' face off the carriage ends?

One suggestion- if you do a poor job painting by hand, DONT. I learnt that very well with my first car models I did. I also lacked primer, so that could have contributed to the problem. And I was wondering, has anyone tried to put a long annie coach casing on a long clarabel casing?

@"ROCKINATOR" I guess an Annie shell could be glued onto a Clarabel chassis, there is no middle post in the Annie shell as far as I know as it was a battery cover.

There is no Center post. Might have to get a broken steam thomas to steal an annie casing off of and the clarabel for the mod.

Slighty cheaper than Scale trains. But not by much if want a real nice layout and do a hefty amount of modding.
