Sound Modules

I was idly browsing eBay like you do sometimes and while looking for something else stumbled across these pretty cool little modules. They are easily fitted/removed/refitted as there is no wiring and they are motion sensor operated so could go in a tender, carriage, well anywhere you got a bit of space really.

They seem to make both Diesel and Steam versions at least, just thought I'd mention them in case anyone's looking for this sort of thing to fit in PlaRail models

Wow, those are pretty neat and they turn themselves on and off...remarkable. Yeah, I thought they were pretty cool too, not cheap admittedly, but as you don't have to permanently install them they can be moved from model to model so the cost isn't quite so bad. In the past any of these sort of things I've seen have been permanent wired in solutions and more to the point dedicated to 'scale model' type trains that draw their power from the tracks.

I also checked out the videos before posting the links, and I agree the steam one is more varied, but there again diesels in real life tend to be a bit like that and only the revs really change.

So how many do you reckon AC's ordered already?!?

I have been looking around this Train Tech web site and I am very interested in these motion activated self contained coach lights. Looks perfect for Plarail. No wiring from coach to coach, no switches, perfect. In fact, my mind is saying I wonder if just the unit can be used for other applications like activating crossing gates only when a train passes by. Funny you should mention the crossing gates thing, I recently came across a capsule scenery piece which is a little train building that has an optical sensor built in which when activated triggers a sound clip. I was wondering if that could be modified to do something else instead, but not really had the time to look into it further yet

Nice! The size makes it perfect for its intended purpose, and I love how just about any toy train ever made can use it because it only needs a battery and a motion sensor. It seems like it could easily be hidden in any engine or rolling stock where no one could see it. I do agree they seem to have put more effort into the steam version than the diesel one (which doesn't surprise me). The diesel one sounds so non specific it could also work for a lorry/bus/other vehicle and not just locomotives.

Indefinitely better than a specialised 'sound car' for a particular system, since it's universal due to its wonderful design. Can't wait 'til one of our members would buy one, though it may not work perfectly with Plarail/TrackMaster since the trains don't start/stop gradually.

I remember well known YouTuber InterCity82 showing how to install them in a video of his. The H0/00 strip seems a bit long for Plarail, but there is an N Scale version which may or may not work better (depending on the type of coach).

The LED strips can be cut shorter without affecting the lights. My main goal would be aimed at the battery pack and if the motion sensor i3 in that. I had watched the video you speak of for the HO scale Lighting. Awesome, I didn't notice that Train Tech also made the strips for the N scale. More ideas are floating in, must look into them also. They look to be the same price. Just discovered this video for the N Scale Light Strips. Thanks DalaGStanator.

Upon further investigation the N Scale strip has the same number of LED Lights but they are closer together but use a smaller 3 volt coin battery. I am guessing but it probably wouldn't last as long as the CR2032 coin battery used in the HO Scale strip but the advantage would be it doesn't take up any room as its placement on the strip is between two lights and not at the end. Has anyone an idea as to comparing the life expectancy of the CR2032 vs the CR1225 battery?
